When They See Us

Social injustice can affect many individuals and areas of society. I believe that the best way to find solutions to the issues of social justice is to educate and bring awareness to the problem. In the movie, “When They See Us”, five teenage boys were wrongfully accused and charged with raping and assaulting a female jogger in Central Park in NY. The police and detective coerced the teenagers into making false statements. The teenagers were convicted and sentenced to many years in jail for a crime that they did not commit. They were finally exonerated when the real serial rapist confessed and provided physical evidence such as DNA that he committed the crime. The social injustice that I observed in this movie was that the police discriminated by assuming quilt of the five black boys because they fit the description of the suspects.
