This documentary “13th” is a great film that shows you the history of racial inequality in the United States from slavery to Jim Crow laws to lynching to segregation to war on drugs to media profiling to mass incarceration to justice reforms. This documentary focuses on the nation’s prisons that are disproportionately filled with African Americans. The social injustices seen throughout this documentary shows that while the 13th Amendment freed slaves, Black men are still imprisoned for minor offenses or nothing at all, causing oppression. The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery but allowed mass incarceration.
Watch the documentary on Netflix. What are your thoughts on this film? What are your thoughts on mass incarceration? What are your thoughts on the justice reforms (probation/parole/ GPS bracelet monitoring)?
