The documentary, “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution”, shows how legislative changes were established by a group of teens with disabilities through their efforts by bringing awareness to the unfairness that people with disabilities face. This documentary shows the many barriers that people with disabilities face such as neglect, loneliness, not being allowed to enroll in schools, asked to leave public places, denied jobs, or difficulty with transportation like lack of wheelchair ramps or elevators. In this documentary, a disability movement was sparked by these young teens when they experienced the compassion of a camp “Camp Jened” in New York, that treated them with kindness, respect, and dignity. The social injustice that I observed in this documentary included the lack of rights, support, respect, and the discrimination that people with disabilities faced then and now. Things have improved since the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the American with Disabilities Act of 1990 were established, which outlawed discrimination in employment based on physical or mental disability and provided accessibility to buildings and public/private transportations. However, we must continue to fight for the rights of all.

Watch this documentary and comment on what you think. How can we continue to make things better for people with disabilities?

By bringing awareness to an issue, protest, speak out, and by having a voice.
